Champions League Draw: excitement builds for playoffs
Today marks the exciting Champions League draw for the playoff rounds. Several powerhouse clubs, including Manchester City and Celtic, are gearing up to find out their next-round opponents. The draw holds high stakes as it could make or break their dreams of progressing in the competition.
Not everyone has to endure the nerve-wracking playoff rounds. Arsenal, Aston Villa and Liverpool, having finished among the top eight, have earned a well-deserved bypass. Similarly, Atletico Madrid, Barcelona, Bayer Leverkusen, and Inter Milan, along with Lille, have also secured their spots in the round of 16.
How do the playoffs work?
The playoff draw is designed to pair clubs based on their finishing positions. The higher your ranking, the more favourable your opponent is likely to be. For instance, Atalanta, which finished 9th, and Borussia Dortmund, placed 10th, will each face one of the teams that finished at the very bottom: Sporting and Club Brugge. It’s a high-stakes match, determining who moves ahead in the competition.
similarly, Manchester City or Celtic, who finished in the top half at 21st and 22nd places, respectively, face a daunting task of facing either 11th-placed Real Madrid or 12th-placed Bayern Munich. It’s a tough draw indeed.
A select group of four clubs will then be drawn against one of the top eight seeds. For instance, Liverpool’s potential opponents in the next round could be Monaco, Brest, Paris Saint-Germain, or Benfica. The matches are sure to be thrilling and packed with action!
