Premier League’s Top Own Goal Scorers: A Surprising Statistic

Premier League history has witnessed over 1,000 own goals, but which players have scored the most? Let’s take a closer look at your all-time favorite tragic heroes.

Top Players with the Most Own Goals in Premier League History

10 own goals: Richard Dunne.
7 own goals: Martin Skrtel, Jamie Carragher, Phil Jagielka, Lewis Dunk.
6 own goals: Jonny Evans, Séamus Coleman, Frank Sinclair, Ryan Shawcross, Wes Brown.

10 Own Goals

Richard Dunne
Everton, Manchester City, Aston Villa & QPR

Richard Dunne owns the unwanted record for the most own goals in Premier League history, having scored 10 throughout his career. He also shares the record for the most red cards (8) along with Patrick Vieira and Duncan Ferguson.

Dunne’s own goal tally began in calamitous fashion against West Brom in 2004 while playing for Manchester City. This set the tone for a trend of his teams never winning when he scored an own goal, with half of them coming in the last 15 minutes of matches. Dunne completed his haul of 10 own goals playing for QPR against Liverpool in 2014.

7 Own Goals

Jamie Carragher
Liverpool

Unlike Dunne, Carragher had no powers of redemption, scoring only 3 goals in 508 Premier League games for Liverpool, the same number he scored for Tottenham. His worst day came against Manchester United in 1999 when he scored two own goals.

Carragher was the first player to net two own goals in a single Premier League game, a feat matched by a few others since then, including Michael Proctor, Jonathan Walters, Wout Faes, and Craig Dawson.

Martin Skrtel
Liverpool

Martin Skrtel recorded 7 own goals in the Premier League, setting the record for most in a single season (4) during the 2013-14 campaign. Fortunately for Liverpool, they were able to win 3 of the 4 games in which Skrtel scored for the opposition.

Phil Jagielka
Sheffield United & Everton

Phil Jagielka scored 7 own goals in the Premier League, with the first coming for Sheffield United and the rest for Everton. He did, however, have a memorable moment when he kept a clean sheet in goal after Paddy Kenny was injured, helping Sheffield United defeat Arsenal 1-0.

Lewis Dunk
Brighton

Lewis Dunk has joined Carragher and Skrtel with 7 own goals, the most for a single club in the Premier League, after his latest own goal for Brighton against Nottingham Forest in 2024.

6 Own Goals

Ryan Shawcross
Stoke City

Ryan Shawcross, a stalwart of Stoke City’s defense, scored 6 own goals in the Premier League but also managed to find the back of the net 25 times at the right end during his 401 appearances for the Potters.

Wes Brown
Manchester United & Sunderland

Wes Brown scored 6 own goals in the Premier League, with the most memorable coming against his former club, Manchester United, while playing for Sunderland in 2011.

Frank Sinclair
Chelsea & Leicester City

Frank Sinclair was the original Premier League own-goal king, scoring 6 own goals during his time at Chelsea and Leicester City. His best (or worst) came when he and goalkeeper Ian Walker were left to brood over each other after a long-distance own goal.

Jonny Evans
Manchester United, Sunderland, West Brom & Leicester City

Jonny Evans has scored 6 own goals in the Premier League, playing for several clubs, and there’s still hope he might be able to challenge Dunne’s record.

Séamus Coleman
Everton

Everton’s Séamus Coleman has also scored 6 own goals in the Premier League, all for his club, with his first coming against Southampton in 2014.
