Roque Junior’s Premier League Snubs: Leeds United’s Gain

Roque Junior’s Disastrous Leeds United Stint: The Brazilian Defender’s Ill-Fated Premier League Adventure

Any discussion of Leeds United‘s worst signings is incomplete without mentioning the name of Roque Junior. On paper, the Brazilian defender’s arrival at Elland Road was supposed to bolster the team’s backline and propel them back among the Premier League’s elite.

Roque Junior, a Brazil international with a World Cup and Champions League winner’s medal to his name, had impressed with his defensive performances for AC Milan, including a superb display against Juventus in the biggest game in club football just months prior. Expectations were understandably high, and the disappointment that followed was equally profound.

Roque Junior’s disastrous debut, where he was sent off in a 4-0 defeat against newly-promoted Leicester City, was a harbinger of things to come. Across his meager tally of seven appearances for Leeds, the team’s backline was breached a staggering 25 times with the Brazilian on the pitch, a testament to his struggles to adapt to the Premier League.

Speaking to Four Four Two twenty years later, Roque Junior, now 48, reflects on his time at Leeds United. Despite the short-lived and ultimately unsuccessful stint, the former Brazil international insists that he was still the better for the experience.

“I saw it as a chance to experience a new league and country, learning new styles of play and immersing myself in new cultures,” says Roque Junior. “Unfortunately, my time at Leeds was short, but it was an experience I value.”

The former Palmeiras, Siena, and MSV Duisburg defender admits that he chose Leeds over a trio of Premier League suitors. Newcastle United, who had finished third the previous season, and Bolton Wanderers, known for luring big-name talents to Lancashire, had both made offers for Roque Junior.

“I had a few offers to leave Milan then. Even though I’d played in a Champions League final, I wasn’t getting as many minutes as I wanted,” Roque Junior adds. “I needed a fresh challenge and England always intrigued me.

“I received offers from Bolton and Newcastle, but they didn’t progress far. Then, Leeds made an offer. Leeds are a historic club with a lot of tradition. And, in that period [they had recently played] in the Champions League, which shows how strong they were.”

Roque Junior’s decision to join Leeds United was likely influenced by the team’s impressive performance against his former club, AC Milan, in the Champions League group stages in 2000. Leeds famously defeated the Rossoneri 1-0 at Elland Road, with Lee Bowyer scoring the winning goal in the 89th minute against the likes of Oliver Bierhoff, Andriy Shevchenko, and Paulo Maldini.

“I remember those games being tough for Milan, at home and away,” Roque Junior recalls. “Leeds had passionate fans and that atmosphere stayed with me, so I already had a good impression of the club when the chance to join them came later.”

As Leeds United prepare to take on local rivals Sheffield United at Bramall Lane on Monday night, the team is on the cusp of a Premier League return. According to Opta’s statistical analysis, Daniel Farke’s Leeds now have a 95% chance of promotion, a significant step towards reclaiming their place among the elite.
