Premier League’s Fastest Title Conquests

Liverpool Poised to Clinch Early Premier League Glory in 2024-25 Season

The 2024-25 Premier League campaign is nearing its conclusion, and Liverpool appear to be on the verge of securing the title. However, the question remains: could this be one of the earliest title wins in Premier League history?

Following their 2-0 victory over Newcastle United and Arsenal’s failure to defeat Nottingham Forest on February 26th, Liverpool now hold a commanding 13-point lead over their London rivals, although they have played a game more.

Can Arne Slot’s side go on to achieve one of the earliest Premier League title triumphs? Let’s take a look back at the champions who have won the league with the most games left to play.

7 Games Left
Liverpool in 2019-20

Liverpool’s title triumph in the 2019-20 season was a dominant one, as they secured the league with seven games to spare after Chelsea’s victory over closest rivals Manchester City at Stamford Bridge. No team has ever won the English top-flight league title with as many matches left to play as the Reds did that year.

It was a peculiar campaign overall, with the COVID-19 pandemic forcing the season to an abrupt halt in March before resuming in June without fans in attendance. However, this did not stop the Reds from lifting the trophy, ending their 30-year wait for a league title.

Jürgen Klopp’s success with Liverpool added to his impressive resume, as he secured a hat-trick of top-flight league titles, having previously won the German Bundesliga with Borussia Dortmund in 2010-11 and 2011-12.

5 Games Left
Manchester City in 2017-18, Manchester United in 2000-01

The record-breaking 2017-18 Manchester City side won the Premier League title with five games remaining, after West Bromwich Albion’s shock win over nearest rivals Manchester United at Old Trafford. They ultimately secured the title by an impressive 19-point margin over United, the biggest gap between first and second in a single Premier League season.

City’s 32 wins set a new English top-flight record for a single campaign, and they matched this feat the following year when winning the title again in 2018-19, albeit with two fewer points (98).

The 2017-18 season also saw City score 106 goals in the Premier League, the most by a side in a single season since the competition’s inception in 1992. The previous top-flight team to net more in an English league season were Tottenham Hotspur in 1962-63 (111).

Manchester United also won the Premier League title with five games left to play in 2000-01, after eventual runners-up Arsenal lost against Middlesbrough at home.

Before the Premier League

In addition to these Premier League examples, two other clubs have won the English top-flight league title with five games remaining.

Manchester United’s 1907-08 title triumph came with five games left to play, as they eventually won the Division One title by nine points (in the era of two points for a win) ahead of Aston Villa and Manchester City.

Everton’s 1984-85 league title saw them win Division One by 13 points over Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur, with the championship secured five games before the end of the campaign.
