Watford’s Striking Crisis: Cleverley’s Loan Decision Under Scrutiny
Former EFL winger Adrian Clarke believes Watford manager Tom Cleverley is facing the consequences of loaning out striker Mileta Rajovic to Brondby, as the Championship side prepares to face Sunderland.
The Championship side’s recent form has raised concerns, with:
• Three consecutive league defeats
• Only one victory in their last eight matches
• Current 12th position in the league table
• A disappointing 1-0 loss to Norwich City in their latest fixture
Striking Options Limited as Suspension Compounds Problems
The decision to loan out last season’s top scorer Rajovic has left Watford with limited attacking options. The situation has become more critical with current striker Vakoun Bayo facing a three-match suspension.
Clarke highlighted several key issues:
• Rajovic’s proven goal-scoring record from last season
• Cleverley’s personal decision to sanction the loan
• Over-reliance on Vakoun Bayo
• Lack of alternative striking options
Speaking on What The EFL, Clarke expressed his concerns: “I think he will not doubt be regretting the decision to let Mileta Rajovic go on loan to Brondby. He scored goals last season, but he did not fancy him, and he allowed him to leave, and he said that’s my call. It’s on me.”
Regarding Bayo, Clarke added: “Watford have been very reliant on Vakoun Bayo, who I don’t think is a brilliant player, if I’m honest. He can score goals, but he’s a bit erratic, and then, of course, he’s now suspended for three games. So who’s going to play up front for Watford? They don’t really have anyone.”
The Hornets face a crucial test as they prepare to visit fourth-placed Sunderland this Saturday. With their striking options limited and form dwindling, Cleverley needs to find solutions quickly to turn around their Championship campaign.
